Mod Mosaic Baby Quilt - Done!

I can't believe it!  Amidst all of our moving hustle and bustle (we're moving from California to Florida on Thursday), I actually finished a quilt!  So here it is...



If you were following my WiP Wednesday posts, you saw that I said I was going to make 3 of the mod mosaic blocks.  Well, I just didn't.  Time got away from me!  So I stuck with the two I had done, and just went with that.  I decided to spice things up a little bit and give them a wonky orientation on the quilt.

Here's a look at the back.  I mainly just used whatever leftover fabric I had from the front - I'm really growing to love piecing the back for this reason.  It's kind of like a puzzle, and it uses up scraps!

And did you see this little peeker on the back?  I like him.

This is my first full-on attempt at stippling.  I tested stippling out a while back, but I had major tension issues.  Since then, I've figured out the kinks, and when I was thinking of how to quilt it, I just kept coming back to stippling.  And I have to be honest - I didn't really like this quilt...until it was quilted.  The stippling might not be perfect, but it works.

As for the binding, I thought the striped fabric was perfect.

As a background, in case you didn't see my previous posts, the mom said she liked green and brown and monkeys.  I had this very yellow-based sock monkey fabric from a purchase 3 years ago.  I figured if I could pull out what little green and brown that was in the patterns, then I could make it work for her.  So I used Kona Sable, Kona Taupe, and Kona Pistachio.

The baby shower is on Tuesday, but since there's a good chance I won't be going to it (since the move happens two days later), I finished up the quilt before church Sunday morning and took it to the mom.  She ended up opening it there and loved it, so yay!  I'm always nervous that the recipients of my quilts are not going to like them, so I love it when I get a genuine, positive response.

WIP Wednesday #2

Well, folks, I'm afraid I don't have too much to report today.  All I got done is another one of these mod mosaic blocks.   But I will say that this WIP Wednesday post motivated me to get this second block done.  I finished it this morning, so I would have something to post about!



Thank goodness I'm only doing one more of these blocks, because I really wasn't feelin' it this time around.  You can see in this side by side shot that I used quite a few more pieces in the one from last week than this week's.

So that's it!  Hopefully next week, I'll at least have the third block done, but hopefully I'll get more done with it than just that.

WIP Wednesday #1

I've finally decided to start doing WIP Wednesdays!  Which is fitting, since I just started something new, that's not on my 2011 To Do List (how does that always seem to happen?), and I need to finish it soon!

Someone in my church is having her 3rd baby, and the baby shower is coming up in about 2 weeks.  At the last baby shower we were at together (the one I made the Echino Baby Quilt for), she mentioned that she was not really doing a nursery, but she seems to be drawn to greens and browns, and she likes monkeys.  I've had this yellow and red sock monkey fabric for probably 3 years (remember when I bought that, Melissa?), and it got to the point where I just thought I wasn't going to use it anymore, and maybe I should just sell it. 

But when I started to think about what to do for a quilt for this baby, I thought that maybe I could highlight the greens and browns in the fabric, so it's still fits what the mom likes.  This is the first of 3 mod mosaic blocks that I'll be making, and they'll be pieced on the dark brown fabric you see behind it. 

I did a mod mosaic block for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and really enjoyed the process.  This will be a simple quilt, with a lot of negative space, but I'm moving across the country in 3 weeks, so I kind of just need to get it done.

And this has nothing to do with WIPs, but I see some definite WIPs in my future.  I had a birthday about a week ago, and with my birthday money, I bought some books that I've had my eye on - Block Party by Alissa, The Practical Guide to Patchwork by Elizabeth, and I jumped on the bandwagon and got the The Farmer's Wife, with the hopes of joining in the QAL at some point.  And my husband remembered that I said I wanted Sew Liberated, and got that for me.  Isn't he sweet?  It was a great birthday!

So that about sums up my first WIP Wednesday.  I'm not going to list all of my WIPs, because I think that would just depress me.  Check out Lee's blog to see others who linked up!
