Almost two months since my last post. I have to say, I'm loving the "insta" part of Instagram, and it's kind of spoiled me out of blogging.<br />
<br />
But I thought my newest project was worth blogging about.<br />
<br />
My sweet husband recently deployed. Right before he deployed, he bought himself an iPad, so he could stay in touch with us easier. He has a little laptop, but it's pretty old, and therefore pretty slow. Once he got his iPad, I knew I needed to make him a little pouch for it. So I did! Here it is...<br />
<br />
I used some of <a href="http://www.kelbysews.blogspot.com/">Kelly B.'s</a> <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/86370709/wonky-alphabet-pdf?ref=sr_gallery_1&ga_search_query=wonky+alphabet&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=all&ga_facet=wonky+alphabet">wonky alphabet paper piecing pattern</a>, shrunk way down for the FSU, and I used Essex Linen in Black along with some Florida State colors.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="400" src="http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/563607_10152754112165151_694359001_n.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<br />
This is the other side of the pouch...<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="400" src="http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/544802_10152754116790151_300335105_n.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<br />
And a view of the zipper...<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="400" src="http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/536943_10152754126270151_878730145_n.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<br />
I was happy with how it turned out, even if it was a little snug. <br />
<br />
Little did I know that at the same time he bought his iPad, he bought me one, too. I found out after he had already left for his deployment. His mom called to tell me there was a surprise under his nightstand - and there it was! To say I was surprised, is an understatement. What I was even more surprised about was that he had pre-recorded videos for me and each of the kids for us to watch whenever we want to. Isn't he the sweetest?<br />
<br />
Anyway, I love my iPad, and the pretty green protective case he got to go with it. But I wanted a pouch, too!<br />
<br />
I had recently seen a pattern for a cute iPad pouch on Instagram, but couldn't remember whose it was. So I started going through all of my IG friend's feeds to find it, and I finally did. It was <a href="http://schoolhousepatterns.wordpress.com/">Cindy's</a> (of <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/SchoolhousePatterns">Schoolhouse Patterns</a>) <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/120058352/new-ipad-mini-sleeve-case-clutch-sewing?ref=shop_home_feat">eClutch pattern</a>! Isn't it cute? I loved the pocket, and thought that would come in handy when traveling. And one of the things that really made me take notice of this pattern, is the flap that goes across the length of the iPad. It was just a nice little feature that set itself apart from other tutorials and patterns I had seen and made previously.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="New - iPad mini sleeve case clutch sewing pattern - pocket - PDF INSTANT DOWNLOAD" height="400" src="https://img2.etsystatic.com/012/0/5790611/il_570xN.414423894_anoe.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<br />
I quickly bought it, and started my planning.<br />
<br />
I realized that I needed to change the pattern up a bit, because I really wanted to use this charm pack of <a href="http://www.unitednotions.com/fcc_23.pdf">2wenty-Thr3e</a>, and a charm square isn't big enough for the strips needed for the front pocket. So I decided to make the front pocket and the back exterior patchwork-y. This picture doesn't show it, but I also quilted those sections, because every patchwork piece needs quilting, right?<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="400" src="http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/20899_10152797968495151_798289320_n.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<br />
Let me just say that the colors in this fabric line make me so ridiculously happy! I'm so glad that I'm using it in something I'm keeping for myself!<br />
<br />
I thought the 2wenty-Thr3e went nicely with Kona Curry and a gray and white stripe from Moda. Here's the finished product...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2k_gBU7ix1fxyow_2bb2d9WG5Uh5CplEVR84jQ47l9bGcV9f1o-YXHV7IjekVSyrpG4i6eOqkblFHXlNWFQtiHN5sZxpgf0IkibAO11vJklsdXHG-gRLQ4eSH3F0GSltYz0TJ8py_wdqX/s1600/022.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2k_gBU7ix1fxyow_2bb2d9WG5Uh5CplEVR84jQ47l9bGcV9f1o-YXHV7IjekVSyrpG4i6eOqkblFHXlNWFQtiHN5sZxpgf0IkibAO11vJklsdXHG-gRLQ4eSH3F0GSltYz0TJ8py_wdqX/s400/022.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I found that cute button at my <a href="http://www.margiessewmuchfun.com/">LQS</a>, and thought it would be a nice addition to the front flap. It also covers up the stitching from the Velcro (because I forgot to add the Velcro when I was supposed to).<br />
<br />
Here's what it looks like opened up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihkY_SqAwOjrFGw_wPt5MjOcmzpGAP3Yb173WnELehyphenhyphenVbqcFoymUHYFlzYMwWM3Vwu5mOcdIGQXQ1jRsPfPHvgsRolooISmv0MX3np7kWFYKUmZXC9EVvVtZ0NeBeaLMGJQW-TjNf-XGdJ/s1600/024.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihkY_SqAwOjrFGw_wPt5MjOcmzpGAP3Yb173WnELehyphenhyphenVbqcFoymUHYFlzYMwWM3Vwu5mOcdIGQXQ1jRsPfPHvgsRolooISmv0MX3np7kWFYKUmZXC9EVvVtZ0NeBeaLMGJQW-TjNf-XGdJ/s400/024.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxWkNk4yy0ZfHIsJBQT-vWSzWzsXzfTan6Ae7BWcfjiOhldlAPPbBHvN6TltngpeB3e1Udx04Jf1Q53LsDIGzNeMNQrHkOUYFKLjMDLmtTnAVrlLGOCX_CtlXAOh0gy5-_8sleWnHOdYPF/s1600/028.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxWkNk4yy0ZfHIsJBQT-vWSzWzsXzfTan6Ae7BWcfjiOhldlAPPbBHvN6TltngpeB3e1Udx04Jf1Q53LsDIGzNeMNQrHkOUYFKLjMDLmtTnAVrlLGOCX_CtlXAOh0gy5-_8sleWnHOdYPF/s400/028.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The patchwork-y back that I just really love...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOxJaopX5WnU-T9_wFCYnkx5_sxGMDEElNWtpJQrNJ-DEmQeeEurxl0kjRlsNyNiAHfpRyGPvcLGeAEqAXepC7piKRIlbKaP4n3B92KJYb5wqHCu-dVVrkhFGc85Ld1la2FMHZdyLJEtCP/s1600/027.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOxJaopX5WnU-T9_wFCYnkx5_sxGMDEElNWtpJQrNJ-DEmQeeEurxl0kjRlsNyNiAHfpRyGPvcLGeAEqAXepC7piKRIlbKaP4n3B92KJYb5wqHCu-dVVrkhFGc85Ld1la2FMHZdyLJEtCP/s400/027.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And a peek inside. The iPad and it's case fit perfectly! FYI - I thought that the pattern wouldn't fit my iPad with it's case on, so I made the pattern bigger and tested it first. Once I did that, I realized that the original pattern would work just fine with the case, so I followed the patterns original dimensions when I made this one.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFIS1SKwz7LGccf-gxDDztgcr1e4azTRzeYB0bb9KV46jiCyLIkD8AarjLcSlQJaz1onF9e4hsU5phxc5GmDlGG5lhzAX3qlDAvV1yvdJzVPRaUoFz2kd-Af4p2zEjoz86clnveB1KYrvR/s1600/025.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFIS1SKwz7LGccf-gxDDztgcr1e4azTRzeYB0bb9KV46jiCyLIkD8AarjLcSlQJaz1onF9e4hsU5phxc5GmDlGG5lhzAX3qlDAvV1yvdJzVPRaUoFz2kd-Af4p2zEjoz86clnveB1KYrvR/s400/025.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I loved making this pattern, and will probably make more of these! They would make great gifts, and I might even make another one for myself (although I can't imagine I'd love it as much as I love this one).<br />
<br />
The good thing about Cindy's pattern is that there are measurements for not only the iPad, but the iPad Mini and the Kindle, so it's very versatile! If you've been wanting a pattern for a project such as this, I highly recommend this one!Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16790873407769421892noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2797872142495169402.post-73788421312309240602013-02-25T10:19:00.000-06:002013-02-25T10:19:04.756-06:00VeloCity Baby QuiltA girl from my church is having her first baby. Because her husband is deployed, and she doesn't have family in the area, she actually moved back home to be with her parents during her pregnancy. So a few of us from church are putting together a "baby shower in a box" for her, and my contribution is a quilt. I don't know Abbey super well, so I checked out the Pinterest page she made for ideas for the baby room. That's where I saw this painting she pinned. <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I decided to try to find a fabric line with similar colors to those in the painting, and that's when I stumbled across VeloCity by Jessica Hogarth for P&B Textiles. I had seen this line before, but never had a reason to use it, so I was glad the colors fit in well with what I was looking for - it gave me a good excuse to buy some of it!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And as far as a design for the quilt, I've said it before, and I'll say it again - inspiration strikes in weird places! I was watching - of all things - a show on E! (don't judge me, please!), and during a commercial, there was a background of plus signs in different sizes. So I sketched out a design, then went to cutting. I'm calling this quilt, "Pluses Big and Small." Here's the finished quilt front - </div>

<br />
Here's the label -<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix90q1BfGt7E9gjLpreUJshLUI5SPN1A6HWQHMjjxliJIbu5xLOciFL5P-nMND5Ynodg7TsCr2_tWjERXBoPBRcBQqIBIl1bkcVVg_zdHrY9eMTfJjufpmen3244a3J0dxYZCdZnR4TSkB/s1600/017.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix90q1BfGt7E9gjLpreUJshLUI5SPN1A6HWQHMjjxliJIbu5xLOciFL5P-nMND5Ynodg7TsCr2_tWjERXBoPBRcBQqIBIl1bkcVVg_zdHrY9eMTfJjufpmen3244a3J0dxYZCdZnR4TSkB/s400/017.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
For the quilting, I did continuous straight lines through all the pluses. The areas that weren't quilted were a little puffy, so I knew something needed to go in those spots. So I went with small scallops/clam shells. This is my proudest quilting-on-a-home-machine moment! And it was easier than I thought it would be. Quilting those scallops in small sections made it very manageable, whereas quilting the whole thing on my little machine would have been a headache! I love the texture created by both quilting designs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
And here's a shot of the binding. I love the pop of green!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxk1qUCNzN5Oo95fKgezpSD7AoUAdHfzLFgzNaluiqNaGD9qAx5vRaknwL1pH1EWlfjBE4SE0Gb08_xXFNcE7n78XccxT2tYGn6Z8X2a3wEprqsR7q9fb_0f5mkRVm0brCtSqyfzPpLiab/s1600/035.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxk1qUCNzN5Oo95fKgezpSD7AoUAdHfzLFgzNaluiqNaGD9qAx5vRaknwL1pH1EWlfjBE4SE0Gb08_xXFNcE7n78XccxT2tYGn6Z8X2a3wEprqsR7q9fb_0f5mkRVm0brCtSqyfzPpLiab/s400/035.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
For the solid, I was worried about using a gray that would be too dark, and blend in with the dark gray print that I used. I was also worried about using a white that would blend in with the white print I used. So I went to my LQS, and started looking for Kona Ash, which they were out of. But they did have this light gray Moda Bella. I think the it's a perfect complement, because there are light gray elements peppered throughout a lot of the VeloCity prints. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This one was hard to give away! Thankfully, I have enough of the VeloCity left over, so one of these days I can make a copycat quilt to keep.</div>

</div>
Two Christmases ago, I made a Sew Liberated Emmaline Apron <a href="http://sewkellysews.blogspot.com/2011/12/i-almost-forgot.html">for my sister</a>. Recently, a friend asked me to make her an apron, so I was excited to dust off the pattern and give it another go! She said her kitchen colors are red and yellow, so I went with that color scheme, using prints from Riley Blake's Apple of My Eye for the front and back of the apron, and a plaid print from Riley Blake's Avignon. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyGGqCE94fySwnOboNQjZs8rnvA3D4OXo8sHO6_2s2B2KmhYz8KHII2tFSLMf8eBZNDmO9GrvhKUODunzXrHYHyTTBY1v-XHWmg-vYx5bpsJJOLDsfLxReYh7Qe2bc1CfVu5A7PaAtSKnk/s1600/014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyGGqCE94fySwnOboNQjZs8rnvA3D4OXo8sHO6_2s2B2KmhYz8KHII2tFSLMf8eBZNDmO9GrvhKUODunzXrHYHyTTBY1v-XHWmg-vYx5bpsJJOLDsfLxReYh7Qe2bc1CfVu5A7PaAtSKnk/s400/014.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
And just like I did for my sister, I made a couple of hot pads with scraps from the apron.<br />

So here it is!<br />
<br />

I used a dottie backing fabric from Michael Miller that I found at my local quilt shop. I bought almost enough to cover the whole back, but I was short just a bit. So I added in a little section made out of scraps from the front.</div>

I love how the quilting looks on the back. In my last post, I mentioned that I was going to be using my friend's long arm, and that's exactly what I did! Up until right before I started quilting it, I really couldn't figure out what design to use. I had settled on using a pantograph that Marcy had, even though I wasn't totally feeling it. Then, right before I started, she showed me the quilting she did on the ECMQG's QuiltCon Charity Quilt, and pointed out a little section of clamshells. She suggested that as my quilting design, and - Ding! Ding! Ding! That was it! And it was easy to do, because I made each little curve fit into a square, so I really didn't have to put much thought into it. I had so much fun quilting this and it went by so fast! Here's a little more of a close up on the front.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQoxD3Iz7LT_RiGLiJ9q4m2MaAFJ39r28IOeh2ZE7MXWDjdCLDqFSQagPaSO1P_ckGRR7EFXL8pE1SXWvqHZ9UsvsdcHyXc4b6cpQPCvTBEB65h6LioXnPwTAjTC1BZLyJqBTOWSLj8dF0/s1600/030.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQoxD3Iz7LT_RiGLiJ9q4m2MaAFJ39r28IOeh2ZE7MXWDjdCLDqFSQagPaSO1P_ckGRR7EFXL8pE1SXWvqHZ9UsvsdcHyXc4b6cpQPCvTBEB65h6LioXnPwTAjTC1BZLyJqBTOWSLj8dF0/s400/030.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
As far as the binding goes, I was a little worried with what to choose. There's <i>so </i>much going on in the front, that it would be easy to get a binding that clashes. So I picked a print that I had used in some of the squares on the front, but in a color I hadn't used, and I couldn't be happier with it! It's "On a String" in lime by Valentina Ramos for Robert Kaufman. I also put a little patch of Michael Miller's Painter's Canvas in orange to mix it up a bit.<br />
<br />

All in all, this is probably my most favorite quilt that I've made, and I'm so happy that I get to keep it! I snuggle under it every night while I'm watching TV. <br />
<br />
It makes me happy.Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16790873407769421892noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2797872142495169402.post-19527864878070492412013-01-14T10:54:00.002-06:002013-01-14T12:54:00.466-06:00Happy 2013!The end of 2012 is kind of a blur! I didn't get everything done that I wanted to, but I did a few extra things that made it okay to not finished what I had planned. Namely, making these pillow cases to send to students of Sandy Hook Elementary School. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPuPtRVzWcMG4qDfpLfDnS5Ckh5p_baMku-V0BX3wjCvfHr-3GhPvGWIrvi5fuamsm-EHei_cch0isJagcun9Zce5S1TQ6Ygb_L4RsHJHqhXozfeaNIGEygKx-g9hfnYc9XNASOQyhPc8y/s1600/mosaic6e6e3345e8d1d6136c2138d759759d8391f4f77d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPuPtRVzWcMG4qDfpLfDnS5Ckh5p_baMku-V0BX3wjCvfHr-3GhPvGWIrvi5fuamsm-EHei_cch0isJagcun9Zce5S1TQ6Ygb_L4RsHJHqhXozfeaNIGEygKx-g9hfnYc9XNASOQyhPc8y/s400/mosaic6e6e3345e8d1d6136c2138d759759d8391f4f77d.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I found out about this on Flickr, but a quilt shop in Connecticut started this pillow case drive, and I jumped on board! The Flickr group that I originally heard about this from is responsible for probably...well, I don't know how many. But the quilt shop received pillow cases from all over the world! They had to get the word out for people to stop sending them! Over 6,000 altogether - that's pretty amazing! I hope Newtown and the school realizes how much the world is behind them...is thinking about them, praying for them, and loving them.<br />
<br />
As far as Christmas gifts go, I made a couple for my niece and nephew. First up, I made a pillow cover for my nephew's travel pillow. They take lots of road trips, so he actually uses his pillow a lot. He's way into Lego Star Wars, so I found some flannel Lego Star Wars fabric for the cover. I quilted it, and put in some piping and a zipper to make it a little fancier. I have to tell myself that 10 year old boys, don't really care about fancy kind of things, so I tried to keep it simple, but wanted to add a few extras to it. So here he is with his pillow.<br />

My niece is really into dolls these days. For my birthday last year, my husband got me the <i>Wee Wonderfuls</i> book full of beautiful dolls to make. I chose to make her "Patchwork Penny" (but didn't have time to make the patchwork quilt to go with her...I'll have to do that later). I tried to make her resemble my niece as much as possible, so I gave her blonde hair and brown eyes. I also added in some freckles, because my niece has the most adorable freckles on her cheeks. The freckles turned out a little wonky, but I guess that's okay. And I gave her a green dress, because Jessica's favorite color is green.<br />

Unfortunately, Jessica picked up a stomach bug on their Christmas vacation. Here she is sleeping with her new doll, while recovering. While I'm not glad my sweet little niece was sick, I am glad Penny gave her some comfort!</div>

I also made some mug rugs for my oldest daughter's teachers. I used this wonderful <a href="http://charisecreates.blogspot.com/2011/12/apple-tutorial-and-pattern-here.html?showComment=1354893488908#c362720499855003604">Paper Pieced Apple pattern</a> by <a href="http://charisecreates.blogspot.com/">Charise Creates</a>, along with some polka dots, Dick and Jane, and Punctuation fabric.<br />

<br />
I realized after we gave them to the teachers, that I didn't take proper pictures of them - just these I put on Instagram. Oops!<br />
<br />
That was it for Christmas sewing! I was supposed to make two more dolls from the book for my girls, but it just didn't happen. As I realized my time was running out, I decided that they would be getting plenty of gifts anyway, so I can save the dolls for later. My new deadline for them is Valentine's Day.<br />
<br />
The New Year came, and I got swept up in the Scrappy Trip Along Mania that took over Instagram! I just couldn't resist the idea of making something all for myself! And the blocks were super fun to make! I started out making 4 blocks every day. Then one day, I made 9. And the last two days I made 5 each day. I have a total of 30 blocks, and I am so in love with this quilt!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I started the quilting on it, but had to stop due to some tension issues with my machine. Before I even started the quilting on it, I thought how much fun it would be to use a long arm on it (I got spoiled after making the quilt for <a href="http://www.sewkellysews.blogspot.com/2012/12/prince-charming-rubiks-crush-quilt.html">John and Sarah</a>). I had to just step away from the quilt, but I took it with me to the <a href="http://www.emeraldcoastmodernquiltguild.blogspot.com/">ECMQG</a> meeting this past Saturday, and our new president, Marcy, offered to let me use her long arm. I'll definitely be taking her up on that offer in the very near future!<br />
<br />
I also worked on a QuiltCon Charity Quilt for our guild. We attempted to do it travelling quilt style, but it didn't go quite as I expected. Instead of the quilt top growing as it went from person to person, we ended up with a lot of blocks. By the time it got to me (I was last on the list), I was given two big pieces that were already sewn together, and about 5 other blocks. As I was laying them out, trying to figure out how to put it altogether, I realized that I could just make one long strip, and then add fabric to the sides. So regardless of the traveling quilt confusion, though, I am really, really happy with the quilt top, which I finished at our Sew Day on Saturday. Our members added quite a few blocks that I'm totally in love with!<br />

Marcy will be quilting this on her long arm, just like she did for our other <a href="http://www.emeraldcoastmodernquiltguild.blogspot.com/2012/10/modern-bom-quilt-for-charity.html">Charity Quilt</a>, and Kathleen will be binding it - again, just like she did for the other one. I'm excited to see this completed!<br />

I hope your New Year is off to a good start! My sewing resolution for 2013 is to take it easier. Make things because I want to make them - not because I feel like I have to. What about you?Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16790873407769421892noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2797872142495169402.post-27767760918960347702012-12-12T09:13:00.000-06:002012-12-12T09:13:48.767-06:00WiP WednesdayThings have definitely been busy around here! Can anyone say "Christmas Crunch"? Every year, I tell myself that I'll do more in advance of Christmas, so I'm not making things at the last minute. And every year, I don't follow my own advice! Oh well.<br />
<br />
Right now, I'm working on these mug rugs for Kendall's teachers. My daughter loves her teachers, so I wanted to make them something special. I thought it would be cool to incorporate an apple into something quilty, so when I saw <a href="http://charisecreates.blogspot.com/">Charise's</a> <a href="http://charisecreates.blogspot.com/2011/12/apple-tutorial-and-pattern-here.html?showComment=1354893488908#c362720499855003604">paper pieced apples</a>, I knew I had to incorporate those into mug rugs! A while back, I bought some of this Dick and Jane fabric, but didn't really know what to use it for. What better way than to use it for teacher's gifts? I used some Punctuation for the back - again, what better use? I just have to put the bindings on, and I'm done with these!<br />

As far as other WiPs go, I need to make a pillow for my nephew, three dolls from the <i>Wee Wonderfuls</i> book (one for my niece, and the other two are for my girls), and a stocking for my little boy.<br />
<br />
In recent finishes, I made this lined drawstring laundry bag (using <a href="http://www.incolororder.com/">Jeni's</a> <a href="http://www.incolororder.com/2011/10/lined-drawstring-bag-tutorial.html">patter</a>n) for a custom order. A couple months ago, I participated in a craft fair. I had one of these <a href="http://www.sewkellysews.blogspot.com/2012/10/im-still-here.html">laundry bags</a> for sale, and someone liked the bag, but she needed one in yellow and gray fabric. So she contacted me after the fair, and we talked about fabric choices. Here's the finished product (which I love, by the way). I used fabrics from Simpatico and Bliss.<br />

In other news, our family is sick, yet again! Two weeks ago, Tucker and I went to California for a little visit, and I think he picked something up there or from the plane, and brought it home. My middle one, Cami, has it the worst. She's so pitiful, but looks so cute and cozy cuddled up under the <a href="http://www.sewkellysews.blogspot.com/2011/12/12-days-of-christmas-quilt-done.html">Christmas quilt</a> I made last year.<br />
<br />

And Tucker is busy tearing up all the Christmas decorations. His favorite thing to do is take apart the train tracks.<br />

That was also about the time we moved from California to Florida. I was also pregnant. It was also a quick engagement, because they got married a few months later, in October. Right after they got engaged, I asked Sarah about specifics they would want in a quilt - size, colors, etc. - and after moving to Florida, I quickly got started. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfMX5TnFcURVOJQKkNctACFCKwmU9D0zYCdIFvMLLLCMQCzzBQG_eOHqT5fVM5t1eC1DhGEEvJ3AJ2ReLRP31wIlcfyp-etEETQ4d_PSAoWgEMEwuZy8fxdr3G7yY3A6e5UKho1E-PY9b_/s1600/384.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfMX5TnFcURVOJQKkNctACFCKwmU9D0zYCdIFvMLLLCMQCzzBQG_eOHqT5fVM5t1eC1DhGEEvJ3AJ2ReLRP31wIlcfyp-etEETQ4d_PSAoWgEMEwuZy8fxdr3G7yY3A6e5UKho1E-PY9b_/s400/384.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;">Playing with the layout. This was taken on 8/19/11, when we were temporarily living at my mom's house before we closed on our house.</span></div>
<br />
I picked <a href="http://www.filminthefridge.com/">Ashley's</a> <a href="http://www.filminthefridge.com/2011/02/07/an-anna-maria-horner-rubiks-crush-quilt/">Rubik's Crush</a> pattern for the layout of the quilt, and ordered Tula Pink's beautiful line of fabric, Prince Charming, in the indigo and honey colorways, and Kona Snow for the neutral. I had every intention of finishing this in time for the wedding, but...it just didn't happen. I work well with deadlines, but <em>realistic</em> deadlines. And with everything we had going on in our lives at that time (we didn't even move into our house until 3 weeks before their wedding), getting a queen size quilt done by October just wasn't realistic for me. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;">First ECMQG meeting on 9/29/11. I made some progress, but with only a couple weeks until the wedding, it was obvious I wouldn't finish in time.</span></div>
<br />
After I passed the wedding deadline, I didn't really have a deadline anymore. It just kind of became this quilt that I would finish...eventually. So I worked on it here and there, with my husband <strike>nagging</strike> gently reminding me that I really should finish it sooner than later. But again, I didn't have a deadline, so I wasn't totally motivated.<br />
<br />
That is, until August when Sarah told me they would be coming for Thanksgiving! I had my motivation! I realized that my real motivation was giving them the quilt in person, as opposed to mailing it (they live in St. Louis). <br />

<br />
With my butt kicked in high gear, I went to work! Those little tiny 9 patches with borders almost killed me, but I pushed through, and finally finished the top in early November.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;">Taken on 11/4/12</span></div>
<br />
Now that the top was done, the question was how to quilt it? All along, I planned to use a long arm, because this was by far the largest quilt I had ever done, and I struggle even working with a lap size quilt in my tiny machine. I'm sure with a lot of work, I could have done it, but I just wasn't up for the challenge. Thankfully, a local quilt shop in my small town rents out time on their long arm. So I reserved my day, and started thinking about quilting designs.<br />
<br />
Then, my family got sick. Well, we had been sick with colds, sinus infections, ear infections, etc. for a few weeks. But then we got a stomach bug on top of it all. And I had to reschedule my date with the long arm. I started thinking this would never happen! Plus, it was getting so close to my deadline, that I really started panicking. What if something went wrong? What if I couldn't finish before they got here? What if...What if...What if?<br />
<br />
The day finally came for me to use the long arm (four days before they were set to come), and the morning of, I still didn't know how I was going to quilt it. I didn't know what I would be capable of, yet I didn't want to do a regular meander. I thought about quilting each pieced block a certain way, and then the non-pieced blocks another way. But again, I didn't know if I could pull that off, since I had never used a long arm before. So Friday morning I woke up and started doodling. I decided that I would do a kind of rounded square meander.<br />
<br />
I got to the quilt shop, and got started. I practiced a bit on the sides where it was just batting and backing and got the feel of the machine and the design I chose. Then I took a deep breath and went to work!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;">Using the long arm on 11/16/12</span></div>
<br />
I have to say, after all my panicking and build up and negativity, I really didn't need to be worried! The quilting went really well, and I had so much fun doing it, and I was totally happy with the design I chose. Everything just fell into place! By no means is the quilting perfect, but I'm very pleased with the outcome, and totally want to long arm again! And again...and again!<br />

All that was left to do was the binding and the label. I finished the binding at the ECMQG weekend sew, which was the day after I quilted it! Gotta love machine binding a quilt!<br />

Sometimes when I take a long time to finish a quilt, or spend a lot of time agonizing over one, I end up really hating the quilt. But I actually really love this quilt, and I'm happy with everything about it! John and Sarah are happy with it, as well, and that's the most important thing.Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16790873407769421892noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2797872142495169402.post-85622082260049382512012-10-31T01:00:00.000-05:002012-10-31T01:00:07.566-05:00Know Thy Machine<span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Hey There! Chances are, if you're reading this today, it's because <a href="http://www.13woodhouseroad.com/">Shruti</a> sent you, so welcome! I have to be honest, when Shruti asked me to be a part of this blog hop, and I saw the list of other bloggers participating, I asked her if I was the right Kelly (there are a lot of Kelly's in the quilting world - in fact, there's another Kelly doing this same thing tomorrow!). Apparently, she had it right, so here we go!</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br /></span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">1. What machine(s) do you have? Brand and Model.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It is totally and completely <i>not</i> fancy. A Brother CE5500-PRW.</span><br />
<br style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">2. When and where did you buy it? What were the reasons for selecting this(these) particular model(s). What was its approximate cost. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I bought it from Overstock.com about a year and a half ago for just over $100. I had the Brother CE5000-PRW before that, and had problems with it. The 5500 was the next one up from the 5000, plus all of the accessories I had for the 5000 fit the 5500, so it was an easy move.</span><br />
<br style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">3. What do you like about your machine? Have you named it? Have you made a cover for it? </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I like that it's lightweight, which is nice when I take it to weekend sews with my guild. I also like that even though it's a cheaper machine, it really doesn't give me any problems. I haven't named it - I'm not a big namer of things. Even with all three of my kids, we didn't have names for them until <i>after</i> they were born. Naming is not my forté. I have not made a cover for my machine, but someone else has, and I love it! When I was a member of the LAMQG (I have since moved away, and started the <a href="http://www.emeraldcoastmodernquiltguild.blogspot.com/">ECMQG</a>), we did our own version of the Urban Home Goods swap, and Brianna made a beautiful Echino cover for my machine.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2vjaAS2Jhfqsp0SnYlAVBqpvNpx5NVrbqWs-kG9ow9XkYx2_9b2dsQ39NXMHih3teY6auuSeVJu8fJlCa8oqmJZKwT83z1N5pMJbabMM7MEJzm5owHAFDOCYGPid7p4TsWw3RZt1SekzG/s1600/received+(2).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2vjaAS2Jhfqsp0SnYlAVBqpvNpx5NVrbqWs-kG9ow9XkYx2_9b2dsQ39NXMHih3teY6auuSeVJu8fJlCa8oqmJZKwT83z1N5pMJbabMM7MEJzm5owHAFDOCYGPid7p4TsWw3RZt1SekzG/s400/received+(2).JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">4. Does your machine give you any problems? Could you tell us a few? </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sometimes I have tension problems, but usually they work themselves out after I go through the normal list of things to do to fix it. Some of the things I do to fix tension problems, if I think the tension is set correctly is re-thread the machine, both the spool and the bobbin. Then I'll mess around with the tension setting, and usually one of those things will fix it. I can't really think of any other problems I've had with it! I'm really bad about cleaning it, and just recently I ran into an issue, and thought maybe a good cleaning would do the trick. There was enough lint inside to stuff a pincushion! After it was cleaned out, my problems were solved.</span><br />
<br style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">5. What do you sew on it mainly? Quilts, Clothes, Bags etc. How much time do you spend sewing on it? What are the features of the machine that help you improve your work? </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I mainly sew quilts. There's the occasional bag or some other random item I make, but quilting is my passion. Like I said earlier, I have three kids. The oldest is almost 5, and the youngest is 9 months. That means my sewing time is limited. But I still try to get in a few hours each week. I can't really think of any feature that helps me improve my work. It's a good little machine, and it does it's job.</span><br />
<br style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">6. What advice would you give others when deciding about which machine to buy? </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A friend recently asked me for advice because she was in the market for a new machine. I just told her to have a price in mind that you can't go over, and decide what features you can't live without, and go from there. The next time I buy a machine, I'm looking for one that has a bigger harp space than the one I have now. I've already researched and found one that's not uber-expensive, but still has great reviews and the larger harp space that I want/need. In case you're wondering, it's the Brother PC-420 PRW.</span><br />
<br style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">7. Will you share with us a special memory associated with your machine? </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Recently, my oldest daughter expressed an interest in learning to sew. I was so excited to let her sit and play around with the machine! I hope she keeps this interest as she gets older. I would love to see what she creates!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsW9Xur_OPvJn0C_YXz6Sy6Rc1JxvTPyHk8hAmJvKVVGqAMttxy0i44224vVxJjGH8prVbHYOqVnUIDbx0LgYPvQsRGWrW9vvz3rA_mR1gKUnlf3Ht1bLT73WxJUoBx8NUJ-XcC7cT65wk/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsW9Xur_OPvJn0C_YXz6Sy6Rc1JxvTPyHk8hAmJvKVVGqAMttxy0i44224vVxJjGH8prVbHYOqVnUIDbx0LgYPvQsRGWrW9vvz3rA_mR1gKUnlf3Ht1bLT73WxJUoBx8NUJ-XcC7cT65wk/s320/002.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">8. If you had unlimited resources in the world, which machine would you choose to buy and why? </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've been on this kick recently, of wanting a vintage machine. And while most people like to get Featherweights, I ran across a vintage Elna that I would love to have. It's green! And that's my favorite color! You can find them for not-that-much, but I don't <i>need</i> it right now, so I'm not buying it right now. As far as serious sewing machines, I don't really know which machine I'd get. My dream machine would have a stitch regulator and the largest harp space on a sewing machine ever made. I'd probably just go to a few stores and test several machines to figure out which one I wanted. </span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Thanks so much to Shruti for asking me to be a part of this blog hop - it was fun! And thank you for reading this! Well, the Emerald Coast MQG wanted to make a quilt that would be used as an incentive to raise money for a local charity, and we decided to go with Alissa's Modern BOMs.<br />
<br />
The charity we chose is <a href="http://childrenincrisisfl.org/">Children in Crisis</a>, which is a foster care facility for children in four counties here in Northwest Florida. Their mission statement is:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #373737; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22px;">“Providing Homes and Establishing Hope” for the abused, neglected and abandoned children of Northwest Florida. The Children’s Neighborhood provides an emergency shelter for young children, and the family foster homes help with the severe shortage of foster homes in our community. Together, we can make a difference in the life of a child.</span></blockquote>
We were excited to take on this fundraising opportunity, and quickly got to work on the quilt itself. When it came to choosing colors for the quilt, we decided to go with colors that have local significance to this region of the Gulf Coast - we used several colors from a FQ bundle of Kona solids in the Poseidon colorstory. We also used prints from Lizzy House, Michael Miller, and Valori Wells. And we used Kona Bone as the background in each block, and Kona Putty for the sashing between the blocks. Isn't it beautiful?<br />
<br />

One of our members (Marcy) has a longarm, and she so graciously quilted this for us. The pictures don't do the quilting justice! You can really tell Marcy let each block speak to her, and she had a fun time quilting it.<br />

Of course, I had to take the quilt down to the beautiful town of Seaside, Florida for a proper quilt photoshoot. It was a beautiful evening!<br />
<br />

Anyways, all that to say that this quilt could be yours! One person who donates will be receiving this beautiful quilt. All you have to do is go <a href="http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/emeraldcoastmqg/emeraldcoastmqgfundraisingpage">here</a>.Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16790873407769421892noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2797872142495169402.post-53500139698273538882012-10-29T08:40:00.000-05:002012-10-29T08:40:26.870-05:00I'm Still Here!In the past few weeks, I've had a realization - those bloggers that are super popular, have tons of followers, and post every day...AND HAVE KIDS...they're my new heroes. I seriously don't know how they do it. With my new taxi-driver-mom lifestyle, I'm finding it hard to do a lot of things. Blogging is one of them. I am finding time to sew, just not time to write about my sewing! So I thought I'd just do a quick post showing some of the things I've recently made. And by recently, I mean, in the last couple months.<br />
<br />
First up is a bee block for <a href="http://bloodrecollection.blogspot.com/">Natalie</a>. She asked for wonky stars with these beautiful orange fabrics. She said the block could only have one star, or multiple stars. So I went with three. I've never made a wonky star before, but I had been wanting to so badly, so I'm glad I had this "excuse."<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEits3Gp6fk4TSu7wl3qwsWY6frzI6-jL7Q6Eis3bQuX5D935GMotThz25DYnfAZzLGzrIjxXlJjwjK4bPki5S-XRE8yipWO1rL2VIW_K_lB8wrvC2ASZCYEVVDbr2n0v_Er_XvJugNkQ2zU/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEits3Gp6fk4TSu7wl3qwsWY6frzI6-jL7Q6Eis3bQuX5D935GMotThz25DYnfAZzLGzrIjxXlJjwjK4bPki5S-XRE8yipWO1rL2VIW_K_lB8wrvC2ASZCYEVVDbr2n0v_Er_XvJugNkQ2zU/s400/003.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Next are the items I made for the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/modernista/">Modernista Homemade Kitchen Swap</a>. My partner was <a href="http://laughterinquilts.blogspot.com/">Karen</a>, and she asked for pretty much anything. She said she likes color combinations like blue and green or yellow and gray. I went with the yellow and gray (obviously) and made her a table runner/kitchen mat, kitchen towel, and potholder.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIO_mIgJNy2yaB1wuTs-caN2ZrUwkxGxO8PrQjZk3_y0E7Qb2MKnC5FGab5ztipM98DmyXJ9osX0kQzXSfpW_Cx1BZ2nBV2u-4sRqR7s0bn_guxQZ0OKTQYvhOW9gVmumiOyehD3PdW7bL/s1600/004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIO_mIgJNy2yaB1wuTs-caN2ZrUwkxGxO8PrQjZk3_y0E7Qb2MKnC5FGab5ztipM98DmyXJ9osX0kQzXSfpW_Cx1BZ2nBV2u-4sRqR7s0bn_guxQZ0OKTQYvhOW9gVmumiOyehD3PdW7bL/s400/004.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's the back of the pot holder. I used <a href="http://www.ohfransson.com/">Elizabeth Hartman's</a> <a href="http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/2010/06/quilted-potholder-tutorial.html">tutorial</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1U_ztm4Zqahq5hYNtYuHL7ADpBPBmmp0YJ67NujROUhsmkJrrJFTwb9LvdHwpm8WXjrp-v9GDdWKfQUk3VlGrs0vwjvcqij7DsJMjttFFnLRWQQ0MNaE9fbzFVIXAB-k0Hxv9Ri-ey2sk/s1600/011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1U_ztm4Zqahq5hYNtYuHL7ADpBPBmmp0YJ67NujROUhsmkJrrJFTwb9LvdHwpm8WXjrp-v9GDdWKfQUk3VlGrs0vwjvcqij7DsJMjttFFnLRWQQ0MNaE9fbzFVIXAB-k0Hxv9Ri-ey2sk/s400/011.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I also finished up these two quilts. <br />

I also made this fall pillow. If you've followed my blog for a while, this may look familiar to you. It was part of a QAL, and started out as a quilt for my second daughter. I wasn't able to finish it as a twin size (which is what the QAL was for), so I finished the quilt at the size I stopped at and made a <a href="http://www.sewkellysews.blogspot.com/2011/12/giving-and-receiving.html">baby quilt for my friend's daughter</a>. I still had all these strips of squares left over, so I made a pillow out of them. <br />

I also made this laundry bag version of <a href="http://www.incolororder.com/">Jeni B.</a>'s <a href="http://www.incolororder.com/2011/10/lined-drawstring-bag-tutorial.html">drawstring bag</a> out of Valori Wells' "Nest" collection.<br />

Those last few items, I made for a craft fair that I participated in over the weekend. They didn't sell, so they're now listed in my <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/SewKellySews?ref=search_shop_redirect">etsy shop</a>.<br />
<br />
Now this may seem like a lot of stuff, and some of my friends with small kids ask me how I do so much. But really, I work very slowly. What you're seeing are things that I've worked on gradually over a few months. I rarely ever just crank something out quickly. But that's okay! You know why? Because these people are the reason I can't crank something out, and the reason I haven't been blogging much. I love them all so much, and I wouldn't change anything about my life right now!<br />
<br />

Basically, you bring in a bag of scraps, swap those scraps, then make something with the scraps you received to give back to the owner of the scraps. I like this swap, because in some swaps, you might get an item that is made out of fabric you're not crazy about. With this kind of swap, it's pretty hard to be disappointed!<br />
<br />
I got Melissa's scraps. Melissa is pregnant with her first baby, and she's not finding out the sex of her baby. I'm usually not a fan of gender neutral quilts, however, Melissa's take on gender neutral colors is modern and cool - orange, red, and turquoise! And the scraps she sent were delicious! She asked for a wall hanging out of her scraps. And because she sent such generous scraps, I was able to even get the binding out of them, and the only thing I added was Kona Snow for the background on both sides. <br />
<br />
I made the wall hanging in a way that she could choose which side she wanted to show, so there's not really a front and a back. There's a Side A and a Side B. Here's Side A: Pinwheels!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixPEpnA8KjNoNOlUOXeTNBd0okt1qLnpTV5CY7ZkqDAYtDdYS6MAXPYgL6qWS-a9z4T5B9KHc5jFP98QpzIfEqi8eojq-Zz98L_PBRfS3vYw6KNZBx5Jo-MlcXA2Ak5PyNO3ftloIuc6hn/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixPEpnA8KjNoNOlUOXeTNBd0okt1qLnpTV5CY7ZkqDAYtDdYS6MAXPYgL6qWS-a9z4T5B9KHc5jFP98QpzIfEqi8eojq-Zz98L_PBRfS3vYw6KNZBx5Jo-MlcXA2Ak5PyNO3ftloIuc6hn/s400/002.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And here's Side B: Improv.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggzt62BGmu83TDdisDB_bmte2bkUFmU2kV6f_PeLVD0donk808cMBr0CJAgcGq-UXAS1CSMjs9IvjjF4avz5blKjMDV4bjQgw0VF77xHGXP04exkiVfWZyGlMjvinU9nwkkV-Z9_ArbaTc/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggzt62BGmu83TDdisDB_bmte2bkUFmU2kV6f_PeLVD0donk808cMBr0CJAgcGq-UXAS1CSMjs9IvjjF4avz5blKjMDV4bjQgw0VF77xHGXP04exkiVfWZyGlMjvinU9nwkkV-Z9_ArbaTc/s400/003.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I thought seriously about doing some handwork on the pinwheel side, but couldn't figure out a way to effectively do that. I emailed a few people and got opinions, but still couldn't visualize anything. We went on vacation a couple of weeks ago, and I packed up an embroidery bag, prepared to work on it during our drive and other down times (yeah right). When I pulled it out of the bag, I asked my husband what he thought, and he told me he that he liked the simplicity of the design and embroidery would take away from that. I immediately questioned him to see if he just didn't want me to work on anything sewing related on our trip. He promised that wasn't his reasoning. After I thought about it some more, I decided to go with what he said, and I (obviously) didn't add any.<br />
<br />
So I was left with how to quilt it. Yes, the quilt was simple, but I didn't want it to be <i>too</i> simple!<br />
<br />
I finally decided to do concentric circles inside the pinwheel. I felt like it added movement. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPyDcHR0wUs3AebkDq76-3lWxkGfW9yXfOuorXolfVxcl7azBWw0sIx0gBUQfLYUjDRxMtf3uXNbWZjRnpbunO8cgJRAvvE6uauD-8muSdhNFiZSItg13ffkK6kNZ7TyX7C0zZRjryE6kP/s1600/006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPyDcHR0wUs3AebkDq76-3lWxkGfW9yXfOuorXolfVxcl7azBWw0sIx0gBUQfLYUjDRxMtf3uXNbWZjRnpbunO8cgJRAvvE6uauD-8muSdhNFiZSItg13ffkK6kNZ7TyX7C0zZRjryE6kP/s400/006.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I then just free motion quilted over the rest of it. FMQ and I have a love-hate relationship, but I'm happy to say that this is my best FMQ work so far! Don't get me wrong, I went pretty S-L-O-W with it. But it's a small quilt, so even with me working slow, it didn't take long.<br />
<br />

<br />
I finished it up the night before our meeting, and was so excited to give it to Melissa in person. I think she approved!<br />

<br />
When it came to my scraps, the night I was picking them, I decided to pick all polka dot fabrics. I love me some polka dots! The last time we did this swap, I got <a href="http://www.kelbysews.blogspot.com/">Kelly B.'s</a> scraps, and hers were all polka dots. But as I was picking and choosing which polka dots to include, I came across my basket of Echino scraps. Let's be honest. I'm not going to do anything with those Echino scraps in this lifetime, but I just can't make myself throw them away! So that when I decided to fill a bag full of Echino goodness.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Kira got my scraps, and I was confident she would make something wonderful out of them. And she did! Even though she didn't think so. She made this amazing notebook cover! Here's the front and back...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I gave some pretty tiny scraps and I think she used them all in a great way. She had more of those blocks made up, so she gave those to me to use in another project, which was awesome! Kira said something about things not working out the way she wanted them to. I don't know what she was expecting, but I am completely thrilled with this! Can't you tell?<br />
<br />

Like I said, it's hard to be disappointed when it's your own scraps!Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16790873407769421892noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2797872142495169402.post-55705098993126545782012-09-26T10:17:00.002-05:002012-09-26T10:17:57.565-05:00WiP WednesdayNow that I finished up those <a href="http://www.sewkellysews.blogspot.com/2012/09/sister-brother-cousin-quilts.html">three quilts</a> that I kept talking about in my last few WiP Wednesday posts, I can work on other projects! <br />
<br />
First up is something I'm working on for my guild's scrap swap. I'm making a wall hanging for my partner, who gave me really great scraps to work with. I finished up the quilting last night (thanks to my husband taking all three kids to the oldest one's soccer practice), and all I have left is the binding. I don't want to give away too much, so here's a little peak at the quilting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj22B0kXSEBya8uiykui89KGzhBWRxjVeIftxW6DapYG_s-J4uvt3KGe9UUoMcMgGeeQ53ZPyK0apskez2AgFuRwPjhuoixXE7zuxI3s6RgktrTaysitHf_IUsIHw2BvhURrjrOhRfuFZpc/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj22B0kXSEBya8uiykui89KGzhBWRxjVeIftxW6DapYG_s-J4uvt3KGe9UUoMcMgGeeQ53ZPyK0apskez2AgFuRwPjhuoixXE7zuxI3s6RgktrTaysitHf_IUsIHw2BvhURrjrOhRfuFZpc/s400/002.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I also signed up for the current round of the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/modernista/">Modernista Homemade Swap</a> on Flickr. For this round, we're focusing on things for the kitchen. I went to my LQS and picked up some fabric for the swap.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRH3cWTpmQGzww-BwYtg9xpwpQsNM7e_V8kvvQtiDDm5GCSEN7UpOOygV9piaAV-SNsCG7Q5Qlo88ucCSUoDKQz8p15sc8P_jb9JZ4Wo3wGefp1_jgbZwSKIWZktodG7E0BbOh1pt1EzV0/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRH3cWTpmQGzww-BwYtg9xpwpQsNM7e_V8kvvQtiDDm5GCSEN7UpOOygV9piaAV-SNsCG7Q5Qlo88ucCSUoDKQz8p15sc8P_jb9JZ4Wo3wGefp1_jgbZwSKIWZktodG7E0BbOh1pt1EzV0/s400/001.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I haven't decided what to make my partner yet, but I'm hoping these lovely fabrics will speak to me.<br />
<br />
At the end of October, I'll be participating in a local craft fair, so I'm really hoping to get some stuff made for that. I don't have my own booth, so the pressure to make a ton of stuff is off. But still, I'd like to have a few things!<br />

They were for my two friends, who are sisters - one of them has two boys, and the other one just had her first baby. We were going to be on vacation in Orlando, and the sister that just had her baby lives in Tampa. The other sister was going to be visiting the same weekend we were going to be in Orlando. Confused yet? That's okay. The point is, I needed to finish all three of these quilts before our trip. And I did! All I can say is, I work well with deadlines! <br />
<br />
Here's the first quilt - for one of the brothers. I made a blanket for him when he was born almost three years ago (before I started quilting), but it got lost in the mail! So he was way overdue for a present from me. I did a variation of "Drip" from <a href="http://www.handmadebyalissa.com/">Alissa Haight Carlton</a>'s book, <i>Modern Minimal</i>. The pattern was for a nice lap sized quilt, but this was quite a bit smaller.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6_aEhepHJPKR3u4WBUNgQv2QIN1bzHugpyS81gnd85bsC0byCcfC7PIiubQ_2l2GkMMhl-0iK-7WbmVfRFbM5OVL2ti7_I_u3PWR-esKxmcuFXMZqenZOU4bWFwBja6_sw25buPbAUsO7/s1600/059.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6_aEhepHJPKR3u4WBUNgQv2QIN1bzHugpyS81gnd85bsC0byCcfC7PIiubQ_2l2GkMMhl-0iK-7WbmVfRFbM5OVL2ti7_I_u3PWR-esKxmcuFXMZqenZOU4bWFwBja6_sw25buPbAUsO7/s400/059.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
For the quilting, I mimicked the loop-de-loo pattern in one of the fabrics from this Fox Trails line by Riley Blake. I'm really happy with how it turned out, and it went quickly!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1SmGQQe2R5x-FFdhZFcaPx79xVKnGZtGrtjFNxGTE8I3u0LeM16AvLiMxgEmtXIKC3v_Yfd6xU1YKSHRcUiK0P45dn1RKnsllPCYlg7JLkZ8GWWOtNFxRhafNoJGivF44rUVjeZYgilS8/s1600/060.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1SmGQQe2R5x-FFdhZFcaPx79xVKnGZtGrtjFNxGTE8I3u0LeM16AvLiMxgEmtXIKC3v_Yfd6xU1YKSHRcUiK0P45dn1RKnsllPCYlg7JLkZ8GWWOtNFxRhafNoJGivF44rUVjeZYgilS8/s400/060.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
For the back, I used the Fox Trails in flannel, and it's so soft and snuggly!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtsk9Zg4282r3VKcs6tZQlgvaDP28LXXR3nMETX86MD_ppoCbsTVqcpTFKiXgjslro_Yk9DL6nUJIcfauVa3bCB7KC9APL16iEBhul4nzaq3ZNaj9bmCTYhkt88obXUH5Qscl6zzpSsMnS/s1600/062.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtsk9Zg4282r3VKcs6tZQlgvaDP28LXXR3nMETX86MD_ppoCbsTVqcpTFKiXgjslro_Yk9DL6nUJIcfauVa3bCB7KC9APL16iEBhul4nzaq3ZNaj9bmCTYhkt88obXUH5Qscl6zzpSsMnS/s400/062.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The second quilt is for his brother, so it's the same, just in blue (and it's also accidentally a little smaller - shhhh!).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-gFIssEaTITaQx95h-ljr6Dd1gabfOau91t9c6zPt8fnwBeIyPjG7EIqU9yllyQTtHLrAztXxIb1m9VBzXycfrTFQFdy0x8vKKL1f1TXwtE9kMYG2G4eaC75ZZ4UAGRa6wBOblb51yabv/s1600/051.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-gFIssEaTITaQx95h-ljr6Dd1gabfOau91t9c6zPt8fnwBeIyPjG7EIqU9yllyQTtHLrAztXxIb1m9VBzXycfrTFQFdy0x8vKKL1f1TXwtE9kMYG2G4eaC75ZZ4UAGRa6wBOblb51yabv/s400/051.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I wasn't as happy with this wavy line quilting as I was with the loop-de-loo quilting in the other quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFScPVV5_gEhqWLW6eGqIhHmWvRtCgFYqsTJ937ogIr3LZdBYZKA8-e-0RYYOg3fBJJeZ-3Gfe8cOxU1eRPTwi_Das7xIvukgCsDpuaWaARcwCS4761DyGPXJ1MluRi0YT-hIKXjfV0k51/s1600/052.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFScPVV5_gEhqWLW6eGqIhHmWvRtCgFYqsTJ937ogIr3LZdBYZKA8-e-0RYYOg3fBJJeZ-3Gfe8cOxU1eRPTwi_Das7xIvukgCsDpuaWaARcwCS4761DyGPXJ1MluRi0YT-hIKXjfV0k51/s400/052.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Again, another snuggly flannel back. I'm gonna have to do more of those!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBACOrHiYbbSi1gBpdEmMHrrOpBBwjOJuymDMbM_yObQLb-7ZeESmTZnUJaJ7bB1MclVAvDb9I9VacwVsSVM08FpRztyG3XerOZmFciJleQxapRzFJ_-VQsQAOYbdxE-0MKvWBihnTF4pT/s1600/054.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBACOrHiYbbSi1gBpdEmMHrrOpBBwjOJuymDMbM_yObQLb-7ZeESmTZnUJaJ7bB1MclVAvDb9I9VacwVsSVM08FpRztyG3XerOZmFciJleQxapRzFJ_-VQsQAOYbdxE-0MKvWBihnTF4pT/s400/054.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The reason I went with Fox Trails for these two quilts, is because their last name is Fox. Fitting, right? <br />
<br />
The third quilt is for their cousin, who's only a few weeks old. Again, I used a quilt out of <i>Modern Minimal</i>. This time it was the "Building Blocks" quilt. And again, I made adjustments to the size, but not too much.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0Lg8Nsj2SyXChifvrOaDwTHQ-GXuGBs7_ji6nOTKU4dgngc-U7od5cyKIgNgNU0nFs0nqrfUDo2yGXp6oOx5VKiuYMiGoLySdPCtkFPfkLOSwh0Ycya0Tp5J2v0b81OE5V-cx-CNHxwN2/s1600/066.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0Lg8Nsj2SyXChifvrOaDwTHQ-GXuGBs7_ji6nOTKU4dgngc-U7od5cyKIgNgNU0nFs0nqrfUDo2yGXp6oOx5VKiuYMiGoLySdPCtkFPfkLOSwh0Ycya0Tp5J2v0b81OE5V-cx-CNHxwN2/s400/066.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
I used a mix of Kona solids, with that Alexander Henry print as the focus for everything.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLkLjQ1rXLtiQEaVEKam3gFJ3oP0LF7KQk1cpkNm4shuJpudWjo0luPxQaZ9SLjNzvYssTKIqxnp0S_ZhJV6ta3lm7Qso9_YjC0t4LjJbmnju1zG5xjOBJsXZINVeVZ8AUkLZLhaIr6mHM/s1600/067.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLkLjQ1rXLtiQEaVEKam3gFJ3oP0LF7KQk1cpkNm4shuJpudWjo0luPxQaZ9SLjNzvYssTKIqxnp0S_ZhJV6ta3lm7Qso9_YjC0t4LjJbmnju1zG5xjOBJsXZINVeVZ8AUkLZLhaIr6mHM/s400/067.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
For the quilting, I did a wonky herringbone, which is one of my favorite ways to quilt!<br />
<br />
Here's the back...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhczYK-s0JPtHe0LEGdwfpoiqrTrdbapZcM5hjfaDN7A5g_S8BNf_49mGhL261rH8c4wQOUmcuTdiLiDREt2y5W2i3IO6PDq0J0e5NvdPT5LtN-RBfsn2tTp-TazAcKccUh1pQ1XlUJkmZ4/s1600/068.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhczYK-s0JPtHe0LEGdwfpoiqrTrdbapZcM5hjfaDN7A5g_S8BNf_49mGhL261rH8c4wQOUmcuTdiLiDREt2y5W2i3IO6PDq0J0e5NvdPT5LtN-RBfsn2tTp-TazAcKccUh1pQ1XlUJkmZ4/s400/068.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
And I really love a polka dot binding, so all three of these quilts got one!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghjF1SGuo5EDUtN-uTqx3ezl_1a76qusJ8uRDJ3gFKNBzBCRKb3k2vNQZyk08ptAbA7tPwcc4O3AhM56Ir53sB_nM3LOna77XGFkbgvvylCxD-TiMmULeDR8dTzVPKzv1fECdYqziR2qiF/s1600/071.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghjF1SGuo5EDUtN-uTqx3ezl_1a76qusJ8uRDJ3gFKNBzBCRKb3k2vNQZyk08ptAbA7tPwcc4O3AhM56Ir53sB_nM3LOna77XGFkbgvvylCxD-TiMmULeDR8dTzVPKzv1fECdYqziR2qiF/s400/071.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>

They were all hand-delivered to their rightful owners, and will hopefully be loved, cuddled, and snuggled for years to come.Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16790873407769421892noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2797872142495169402.post-72388843048648744562012-09-13T17:45:00.001-05:002012-09-13T17:46:36.204-05:00I Love A Fabric Mosaic!Rachel over at <a href="http://www.stitchedincolor.com/">Stitched in Color</a> is hosting a fabric mosaic contest, hosted by Alice of <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/FreshModernFabric?ref=seller_info">Fresh Modern Fabric</a> (one of my fave etsy shops). The details are in <a href="http://www.stitchedincolor.com/2012/09/softly-against-black-mosaic-contest.html">this post</a>, so if you love to put together fabric mosaics as much as I do, you should give it a shot! The winner gets a fat quarter bundle of the fabrics in their mosaic! Here's mine...<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For inspiration, I really just went with some of the colors that caught my eye in that quilt pictured on Rachel's post. I usually don't use soft colors like this, so it was fun to do something out of the norm for me.</div>
<br />

First of all, I want to start out with some finishes, because those always make me feel good.<br />
<br />
I talked about this Zip Organizer from the book <i>Zakka Style</i> <a href="http://www.sewkellysews.blogspot.com/2012/08/wip-wednesday.html">earlier this month</a>, and I finished it a couple of weeks ago, just never got around to blogging about it. It's not perfect, but it's done!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTF-9HwouXgnnhLIBv-gsHBvEL_zouYxBj-rtMIOK_YPzYpKb9Ba3a7kR02ve6Pn8kIIyN0k6VSI_XS_YRqBD19OF3p5DaT8dU-Kb5dt6sfSmzvqezScF8Q93VEEwCI1O9CBFnvU0u8eMr/s1600/010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTF-9HwouXgnnhLIBv-gsHBvEL_zouYxBj-rtMIOK_YPzYpKb9Ba3a7kR02ve6Pn8kIIyN0k6VSI_XS_YRqBD19OF3p5DaT8dU-Kb5dt6sfSmzvqezScF8Q93VEEwCI1O9CBFnvU0u8eMr/s400/010.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I kind of cheated on the binding a little bit...so please don't look to closely at it. I machine bound the whole thing, and, well, yeah...it's not perfect.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXkMG4_Q2eS1MMhK5n8LiZyKrQlx2mrCGt-xLFp_G6jvvG5qPYdEl1bK8c0YPZDSd2OqE-47KMlsy4DIqsMWYHl1prBNSBZOwCd_lYazwtrSlne9MYIWAU3LquXWqOb9j-jPWukSYqtH3M/s1600/011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXkMG4_Q2eS1MMhK5n8LiZyKrQlx2mrCGt-xLFp_G6jvvG5qPYdEl1bK8c0YPZDSd2OqE-47KMlsy4DIqsMWYHl1prBNSBZOwCd_lYazwtrSlne9MYIWAU3LquXWqOb9j-jPWukSYqtH3M/s400/011.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Whenever I put zippers in, I'm always a little amazed that they actually work!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCxyTVu2F4pkSmSnpLHC4jJRBAmK_uKoj1LIwvLAlUPlijzB8-Up08TF-xgGzr1Hw-N15qCytdCc13kVAwxM7wcL53qtR79QXO2RQzzsyxJ_CduStmXxvcVeYxP6OJjVpAowtQz2NP7ZYy/s1600/014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCxyTVu2F4pkSmSnpLHC4jJRBAmK_uKoj1LIwvLAlUPlijzB8-Up08TF-xgGzr1Hw-N15qCytdCc13kVAwxM7wcL53qtR79QXO2RQzzsyxJ_CduStmXxvcVeYxP6OJjVpAowtQz2NP7ZYy/s400/014.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I love the inside! I think my friend is really going to like this (it's for her birthday). <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyvcHqeZZtVGtxWEMB0v6VegUKzxpmE1-i7qbmWgntM02i-rkHMblEng-LgPLBk-W6m0AYNSo-u1qiWLggrFmTutp7qlKwS0FLCkwwND21OoBz0myxJhFL1HUqZ65G0-ajp5EYozg5zct_/s1600/015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyvcHqeZZtVGtxWEMB0v6VegUKzxpmE1-i7qbmWgntM02i-rkHMblEng-LgPLBk-W6m0AYNSo-u1qiWLggrFmTutp7qlKwS0FLCkwwND21OoBz0myxJhFL1HUqZ65G0-ajp5EYozg5zct_/s400/015.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This wasn't the easiest thing in the world to make, but not too difficult that it scared me away. I definitely want to make one of these for myself! Just FYI, if you ever make one, please check out the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/zakkastylesewalong/">Zakka Style Sew Along Flickr Group</a> discussion on this project, because there are a few errors in the book, and everything is covered there.<br />
<br />
In my <a href="http://www.sewkellysews.blogspot.com/2012/08/echino-scooter-pillow.html">last blog post</a>, I mentioned that I would start working on fixing up my sewing chair. We live in the Florida Panhandle, and Isaac was <i>supposed</i> to come straight to us, and this chair was going to be my no-electricity project. However, he decided to go over to New Orleans, and we're getting very, very little of the storm - a little wind, a good bit of rain, but nothing crazy.<br />
<br />
I was still able to finish the chair, though! Here's a good before and after...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5JRpJNTW-S93hYMMAlsxSG4I-gSFgfuJvUT2dYS7T8mc1zHogvDMsSfY1kVT46hdFiDDomuMrp8JDPkNRFuoCgwuPqtNQDoh0_vhckjuCxuiRdmx3q0RoUELXVTgTXCuGxt18Jrh18Mi6/s1600/mosaic050deecad056796132d54d3b8375c2eefabcee1d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5JRpJNTW-S93hYMMAlsxSG4I-gSFgfuJvUT2dYS7T8mc1zHogvDMsSfY1kVT46hdFiDDomuMrp8JDPkNRFuoCgwuPqtNQDoh0_vhckjuCxuiRdmx3q0RoUELXVTgTXCuGxt18Jrh18Mi6/s400/mosaic050deecad056796132d54d3b8375c2eefabcee1d.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Quite a difference, huh? I'm so glad I painted the chair before the storm came, because the paint had plenty of time to dry before I got around to doing the seat. Oh, I should say that when I first painted the chair, I painted it gray. It was nice, but it wasn't me - at all! So I went with green, and I'm so happy I did! Green is my favorite color, and I particularly like this shade of it.<br />

<br />
For the seat, I used <a href="http://firstadream.blogspot.com/2011/03/chair-weaving-tutorial.html">this tutorial</a> that I found on Pinterest. I wasn't sure about what color to use for the seat, but I had these two shades of Essex Linen (light blue and dusty blue), and I liked the way they looked together with the green chair. I originally got the light blue linen for this <a href="http://www.sewkellysews.blogspot.com/search/label/baby%20zig%20zag%20quilt">Zig Zag quilt</a> that I made, but after getting it, I decided it was too light, and got the dusty blue to use for the quilt instead. So I had about a yard and a half of the light blue linen, and just a little bit of the dusty blue. I had the perfect amount - literally! I didn't think I would have enough strips, but when I got to the last one, I realized it was perfect! I love it when that happens.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzkt6BfkYj-2sBDuINHKW6FDnIvjvf9pT6hIkZp-h4UtvxDX5_KUuZz_2hVyaKE-XGv5XPNKdyy_xzGFwgvfuml2G9ed8l1wDvoFSv0il_m8_UhDf6m7XexWeb3L3LUYYykNUkAa2_AcAA/s1600/008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzkt6BfkYj-2sBDuINHKW6FDnIvjvf9pT6hIkZp-h4UtvxDX5_KUuZz_2hVyaKE-XGv5XPNKdyy_xzGFwgvfuml2G9ed8l1wDvoFSv0il_m8_UhDf6m7XexWeb3L3LUYYykNUkAa2_AcAA/s400/008.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And look, it actually holds a person (my husband was skeptical)!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgqhKg0ISIXCxblOjyX5GdOvjtWbyNIODoIXLCdl7BQqjc5XQGUsO1_YarfkLFcWprQ-pzamD-iy61PEVKp-bXUlPeTboWBoBOup5R6uUgHKm38LI8F6pJgLwu22gh1FdY949N6uKDpn-Q/s1600/009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgqhKg0ISIXCxblOjyX5GdOvjtWbyNIODoIXLCdl7BQqjc5XQGUsO1_YarfkLFcWprQ-pzamD-iy61PEVKp-bXUlPeTboWBoBOup5R6uUgHKm38LI8F6pJgLwu22gh1FdY949N6uKDpn-Q/s400/009.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
Yes, she's tiny, but me and my husband also tested it out. Kendall is the one that wanted to be in the picture, though. <br />
<br />
Even though we're getting very little of the storm, she's been out of school for the last two days, and my husband has been off work, which has been so great. I've been able to get a lot of work done organizing my sewing room (which means folding lots and lots of fabric).<br />
<br />
Now for the WiP part (if you're still reading), I have four quilts to bind! I just realized that I left one of the quilts out of this picture, but you get the idea.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl5fV_xdZKoU1FOtYHrrtNzQ2rnLZuhmsiTkaOYqPvmSbnvsdXJTE21SC-6jDSGGvA6hAAQh82Gud37KvQGNRA-mKLwo2QUukGEyt-Ckkm5GiolBSWftXQpIowCqgQzdzBzw-8eCw9_O8o/s1600/019.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl5fV_xdZKoU1FOtYHrrtNzQ2rnLZuhmsiTkaOYqPvmSbnvsdXJTE21SC-6jDSGGvA6hAAQh82Gud37KvQGNRA-mKLwo2QUukGEyt-Ckkm5GiolBSWftXQpIowCqgQzdzBzw-8eCw9_O8o/s400/019.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I have never had this many quilts quilted, but not bound before! Usually, when I finish the quilting, I immediately bind it. <br />
<br />
I also still need to do one more birthday gift for next week, and baby quilt before our trip in September, but I'm hopeful that I can actually get it all done!<br />
<br />
So that's it! Check out what other people are working on <a href="http://www.freshlypieced.blogspot.com/2012/08/happy-wip-wednesday-my-name-is-michelle.html">today</a> over at <a href="http://www.freshlypieced.blogspot.com/">Freshly Pieced</a>.

<br />
After I made the <a href="http://www.sewkellysews.blogspot.com/2012/08/nursery-versery-pillow.html">Nursery Versery Pillow</a>, I decided I needed yet another pillow to go on my couch. Friday morning, I cranked out a very simple quilted pillow. I just used this Echino Scooter fabric for both sides, quilted each side in different ways, and added a zipper. I'm pretty happy with it! Those quick and easy projects are always so satisfying!<br />

I found this chair on Craigslist a few months ago for my sewing room, and bought it with the intent of repainting it and replacing the seat, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. I live in the Florida Panhandle, and we're expecting Isaac to hit us in the next couple of days. So I'm anticipating a power outage, which means I need something to do that doesn't require electricity, which means now is the time to get this baby fixed up. Right after I took this picture, I painted it (because you can't really paint outside during a hurricane), and if the electricity does go out, I'll be using <a href="http://firstadream.blogspot.com/2011/03/chair-weaving-tutorial.html">this tutorial</a> I found, using fabric to weave a seat. We'll see how it turns out!Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16790873407769421892noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2797872142495169402.post-23390411763441296722012-08-23T08:22:00.001-05:002012-08-23T08:23:36.822-05:00Nursery Versery PillowWhen I first saw Heather Ross' new fabric line, <a href="http://heatherross.squarespace.com/journal/inroducing-nursery-versery-my-newest-fabric-collection.html">Nursery Versery</a>, I immediately fell in love with it (which usually goes without saying, when it comes to her fabric), but I didn't <i>need</i> to buy it - I'm trying to be better about buying fabric, and only buying what I absolutely need. <i>Trying</i> being the key word. <br />
<br />
But when I heard about the Nursery Versery <a href="http://www.stitchedincolor.com/2012/08/nursery-versery-contest.html">contest</a> that Rachel over at <a href="http://www.stitchedincolor.com/">Stitched in Color</a> is hosting, I finally had <i>needed</i> to buy it! <br />
<br />
As far as which print to pick - it was a hard one. I love "The Itsy Bitsy Spider", but currently, I'm singing a lot of "This Little Piggy" to Tucker, who's 6 months old, because I can't resist his little laugh at the "Wee wee wee" part. It's just too cute. So I went with those little pigs and the patchwork print in the yellow and gray colorway, and made this pillow.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUlLnedzGWF-rE8sC0-B2iAAIlPR6PJQdvNAgWdojpDDHD9bgvktVVGM7AFkTnbcBMZtyRwvtje1_WQ-Ag_mjcH7_6dk-ZZ1ee6JzruITacBLlLO0qx8KnNP7bpIThgFBIefHDRBX5Dynf/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUlLnedzGWF-rE8sC0-B2iAAIlPR6PJQdvNAgWdojpDDHD9bgvktVVGM7AFkTnbcBMZtyRwvtje1_WQ-Ag_mjcH7_6dk-ZZ1ee6JzruITacBLlLO0qx8KnNP7bpIThgFBIefHDRBX5Dynf/s400/002.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I fussy cut each pig, and made two strips out of them along with this gold linen blend I found at Joann's, in kind of a wonky, improv style.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4OpLzsquSCu6xar40qkwAxzrOVPcz9Qqtl41yy3aG6J7J9gEexn6jCdC2sn0oGYveq2_-8ARKeWB6uxC5Dl4KeatZkImqvEp-JqKH8nXxCymvlg1CNQFdnKqAalE6Qetxq-bwu2kHbdYv/s1600/012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4OpLzsquSCu6xar40qkwAxzrOVPcz9Qqtl41yy3aG6J7J9gEexn6jCdC2sn0oGYveq2_-8ARKeWB6uxC5Dl4KeatZkImqvEp-JqKH8nXxCymvlg1CNQFdnKqAalE6Qetxq-bwu2kHbdYv/s400/012.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
For the middle section, I used Yarn-Dyed Essex Linen in Black, and quilted "This little piggy..." and just left it at that. I thought I would quilt more all over the pillow, but I liked it just the way it was.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy2ZRdoovk7mvvPb5inK3skN84dEuJejKyY-bsfZs5I3NHMAeK9BgTM0I23NRboZGNrmlaT6J5q4YpK0YOuTyZvHukKKj6NDFE7uESshKUEw6xwUQ8H6YVa50_G2-av8M0AJJKI5JRCAmg/s1600/004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy2ZRdoovk7mvvPb5inK3skN84dEuJejKyY-bsfZs5I3NHMAeK9BgTM0I23NRboZGNrmlaT6J5q4YpK0YOuTyZvHukKKj6NDFE7uESshKUEw6xwUQ8H6YVa50_G2-av8M0AJJKI5JRCAmg/s400/004.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
For the back, I used both prints, and put in a hidden zipper. <br />
<br />

<br />
I have to give a huge shout out to my mom for this pillow even happening! Along with trying to be better about not buying fabric, I'm also trying to really stick to my "must-do" list...and it's a long one! I'm still new at this three-kids thing, and I'm finding that my sewing time is not that often. I cut the fabric on Monday, started piecing it on Tuesday (but only got one of those piggy strips done), and finished the whole thing yesterday, while my mom was here, watching the kids. I <i>could not</i> have done it without her!<br />
<br />
I was so proud of actually finishing something quickly and before a deadline (the contest ends this Sunday)! You know that high you get? Well, right after I stuffed the pillow form into the cover, I showed it to my oldest daughter, Kendall. And that's when I felt like I got punched right in the gut. I was explaining that the fabrics used in the pillow were designed after the nursery rhyme, and I started saying it to her while pointing to the pigs. I said, "This little piggy went to market, this little piggy stayed....oh." I realized that I put one of the pigs in the wrong order. Not once, but twice! I kinda felt like that last little piggy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9Mng7HHVEVgJbYBDU0yU30Bz1JLTsOi7Fb21cO7K65BEuX_ZgqqhJNEFJsVT9HP3JLNWbPpS9OEQ_SK2Hxg5ZLaycUVhwSV3c5bRwzNxI8enxVGmtLv1s2l8wZ7fIG0R9PxbXE8-MmTGC/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9Mng7HHVEVgJbYBDU0yU30Bz1JLTsOi7Fb21cO7K65BEuX_ZgqqhJNEFJsVT9HP3JLNWbPpS9OEQ_SK2Hxg5ZLaycUVhwSV3c5bRwzNxI8enxVGmtLv1s2l8wZ7fIG0R9PxbXE8-MmTGC/s400/003.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
To say I was disappointed is an understatement! However, Kendall assured me that it was still really beautiful, my husband said it could be a statement on post-modernism (he was being funny), and my dear friend <a href="http://www.weshallsew.blogspot.com/">Melissa</a> encouraged me to use this as an example to my girls (who are showing an interest in sewing) that mistakes happen, and it's okay! Isn't she wise?<br />
<br />
So, I'm okay with this mistake! At least that's what I keep telling myself.<br />
<br />
Hope over to <a href="http://www.stitchedincolor.com/2012/08/nursery-versery-contest.html">Rachel's blog</a> to see the other entries in this contest!Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16790873407769421892noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2797872142495169402.post-45826372638200130152012-08-10T10:19:00.002-05:002012-08-10T10:19:48.714-05:00Why I Love My Kona Color CardYou never know when color inspiration is going to strike. When it does, I have my handy dandy <a href="http://www.robertkaufman.com/fabrics/kona_cotton/">Kona Color Card</a>. For instance, both of my girls have worn this dress that I got from Target years ago, and I've always loved the color combination. I finally decided I needed to just match up the colors, and get the fabric for it.<br />

<br />
Starting from the left, the colors are Kona Snow, Artichoke, Aloe, and Teal Blue. <br />
<br />
Thankfully, Lauren at <a href="http://shop.sewmodernonline.com/">Sew Modern</a> has every.single.Kona in stock! That makes it so easy, especially when you need more obscure colors that your LQS might not carry. I used to frequent this store in person when I lived in Los Angeles (thanks to LAMQG meetings, and just being the coolest fabric store around!), so now that I'm on the other side of the country, it's nice to still be able to get what I need from them, thanks to the online store.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned for what I decide to make with these...I have an idea, I just need to execute it!Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16790873407769421892noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2797872142495169402.post-12064148323595640082012-08-08T08:24:00.000-05:002012-08-08T08:24:46.899-05:00WiP WednesdayA couple of weeks ago, I talked about 3 baby quilts that I'm trying to finish by mid-September. Well, I have <a href="http://www.sewkellysews.blogspot.com/2012/07/wip-wednesday.html">the one that I posted about then</a> basted and ready to quilt. I've also got the second one basted and ready to quilt. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7DwGg_gwZ39EjOVBirYzsXBSNN8QvWeFir5NOfkNze_ud_1qkrKxOVW5qc3CHeze8BHLq4o0PwXwZzNfoEX5AI7l3zBMjNP9bQelz0qFhBRol8zoC-A_PJsqRXy9jiVToxgw1Cp49HFdU/s1600/011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7DwGg_gwZ39EjOVBirYzsXBSNN8QvWeFir5NOfkNze_ud_1qkrKxOVW5qc3CHeze8BHLq4o0PwXwZzNfoEX5AI7l3zBMjNP9bQelz0qFhBRol8zoC-A_PJsqRXy9jiVToxgw1Cp49HFdU/s400/011.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The third one is going to look just like this one, except in the green colorway. I didn't have enough of the linen to piece the top for the third one, so I'm waiting for that. These two quilt are going to be especially snuggly - linen on the top, flannel on the back! I've never done a flannel back before, but I'm thinking I'm going to love it when it's done. Oh, and the line of fabric I'm using for these two is Fox Trails by Doohikey Designs for <a href="http://www.rileyblakedesigns.com/">Riley Blake</a>.<br />
<br />
Before I can finish any of these quilts, though, I have two birthday gifts to work on. The first is for a friend. I started a bag for her last year, but felt really unmotivated to finish it. I just didn't like the design of it. So I cut up what I had for the bag, and started working on the Zip Organizer from the book <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Zakka-Style-Projects-Stitched-Collective/dp/1607054167/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344431636&sr=8-1&keywords=zakka+style">Zakka Style</a></i> by <a href="http://www.iheartlinen.typepad.com/">Rashida Coleman-Hale</a>. This book is awesome, and I know this will not be the only project I do out of it! Here's my progress on the organizer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-rbPequ0aZ1yH4Czs_gDNtW1WCU7JP_WfDhvdvUe8V__KIgA4Xn-N4u26HF_953h4zPn1ACkZay3NUfjpy8iXW23FQYoF_7QgVfryvt68yaAVVEgkSyttrcCRFXaDfXPNAdQX5zbESdpd/s1600/009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-rbPequ0aZ1yH4Czs_gDNtW1WCU7JP_WfDhvdvUe8V__KIgA4Xn-N4u26HF_953h4zPn1ACkZay3NUfjpy8iXW23FQYoF_7QgVfryvt68yaAVVEgkSyttrcCRFXaDfXPNAdQX5zbESdpd/s400/009.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I was just using those two <a href="http://freespiritfabric.com/core-pages/gallery.php?gal_id=335">Kumari Garden</a> prints for the bag that I ripped up, but when I decided to do the organizer, I wanted to add in a couple of fabrics. The green and white polka dot from <a href="http://cloud9fabrics.com/">Cloud 9</a> and Robert Kaufman Quilter's Linen were perfect matches!<br />
<br />
The second birthday gift I need to make is for my sister-in-law, but I'm not going to say anything else about that, because she might actually read this.<br />

I'm on a roll!<br />
<br />
For WiP Wednesday today, here's a quilt top that I just finished. I'm basing it on the "Building Blocks" baby quilt/playmat from <i>Modern Minimal</i> by <a href="http://www.handmadebyalissa.com/">Alissa Haight-Carlton</a>. I changed a few of the dimensions to make it slightly bigger, but it's all basically the same. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXfXReNSnI6aO9mzkm6-hEi1wc4F-oDCvWdjQD-f1vJBmy5QglmswEYNzirZmrki55idvK6NZWqBoSSvegmAmXdA7GVIQtMq_YF9tFSuXDKLTaG2ouGlyTSaxNRz1vL408c57aa7jnIhBs/s1600/005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXfXReNSnI6aO9mzkm6-hEi1wc4F-oDCvWdjQD-f1vJBmy5QglmswEYNzirZmrki55idvK6NZWqBoSSvegmAmXdA7GVIQtMq_YF9tFSuXDKLTaG2ouGlyTSaxNRz1vL408c57aa7jnIhBs/s400/005.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This is going to be for my friend, Ange, who's due with her first baby in September. She lives in a different part of the state, but I'll be seeing her in person shortly after the baby is due, so I'm trying to get this finished before then. Her sister, Kellie (who is my BFF) will be visiting Ange at the same time I'll be visiting. Since Kellie has two kids that I've never made quilts for, I'm trying to also make quilts for them. I love giving quilts in person, when at all possible, and since I haven't seen Kellie in two years, and who knows when I'll see her again, this is a perfect opportunity!<br />
<br />
Three quilts by mid-September...I know I can do this! For those two quilts, I'll be using another pattern from <i>Modern Minimal</i>. Hopefully I'll have those pieced in the next week or so.<br />
<br />
In other WiP news...I'm prioritizing my to-do list by month, and I'm already done with my list for July! I needed to do <a href="http://www.sewkellysews.blogspot.com/2012/07/ive-been-kind-of-slacking-when-it-comes.html">Alison's and Melissa's Bee blocks</a>, my <a href="http://www.sewkellysews.blogspot.com/2012/07/quiltcon-block.html">QuiltCon block</a>, and get fabric cut and divided 11 ways, so I can mail it out to the members of <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/beehappybee/">Bee Happy</a> at the beginning of August. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
And just because he's cute, here's a picture of my happy little guy. Tucker's almost 6 months old now and is the happiest, sweetest, easiest baby ever!<br />

I hate to admit how long I've been working on this block (cough <span style="font-size: xx-small;">twomonths</span> cough) - <span style="background-color: white;">I started it, and was only be able to work on it here and there - </span><span style="background-color: white;">but it's finally done! It's a big one, measuring 12.5" x 24.5".</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCYzXglDCM81xEaLi_fxV7ydoULKB2PIUbDZhAia05fOxXUi2H0A9Whj4RKFOAu2C6e7hsy9hfub0dwAwH0Y0LEArcqoRyCVUIcPmTLUH8dkEPo6yDTbMsDhaCIO8fXarq1qI7WzaSCYLn/s1600/005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCYzXglDCM81xEaLi_fxV7ydoULKB2PIUbDZhAia05fOxXUi2H0A9Whj4RKFOAu2C6e7hsy9hfub0dwAwH0Y0LEArcqoRyCVUIcPmTLUH8dkEPo6yDTbMsDhaCIO8fXarq1qI7WzaSCYLn/s400/005.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span><br />
I was 100% inspired by <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/60587557457183961/">this picture</a> I found on Pinterest a while back. I originally planned to have the middle row of chevrons the longest, like in the picture, but changed my mind once I started. I call this "cascading chevrons."<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg04DytyHHJTtEcHHAqLDd72k_I5KTPfbL5UqOEfNoc8uWBqSTtgOzXM924YzPPx-MNWe_E8UZQ8mCNHI42lLgOy8lsXWjL2NwGkhP714n8PGCXaigtqojMmvrzBNRJpcq-6IG5Zju_TmLp/s1600/006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg04DytyHHJTtEcHHAqLDd72k_I5KTPfbL5UqOEfNoc8uWBqSTtgOzXM924YzPPx-MNWe_E8UZQ8mCNHI42lLgOy8lsXWjL2NwGkhP714n8PGCXaigtqojMmvrzBNRJpcq-6IG5Zju_TmLp/s400/006.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
My oldest daughter wanted her picture taken with it, especially since she "helped" me today finishing the last row.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I'll be sending it off, along with others from the <a href="http://www.emeraldcoastmodernquiltguild.blogspot.com/">Emerald Coast MQG</a> after our meeting next week! And maybe - <i>maybe</i> - I can get another block done before then. <br />
<br />
Check out what other beautiful blocks have been made for this challenge in the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/quiltconblockchallenge/">QuiltCon Flickr Group</a>.Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16790873407769421892noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2797872142495169402.post-32770946087614823942012-07-19T16:50:00.002-05:002012-07-19T16:51:17.353-05:00Bee Happy 2011-2012I've been kind of slacking when it comes to posting about the blocks I make for <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/beehappybee/">Bee Happy</a>, but we just finished (are finishing) this round! This was my first bee experience, and I have to say it's been fantastic! The girls in this bee are just amazing. Period. Out of all of us, I'm probably the least when it comes to using words, so I'll just leave it at this - I am blessed to be a part of this group, and I'm so thankful that <a href="http://www.weshallsew.blogspot.com/">Melissa </a>convinced me to join last year.<br />
<br />
Here are the most recent blocks I've made...<br />
<br />
<a href="http://theoccasionalpin.com/">Alison</a> sent all of us scraps of lovely vintage sheets and asked for two word blocks - one with our name, and the other with a word that reminds us of her, of the LAMQG, or of Bee Happy. For that block, I chose to do "LAMQG," since that's how I know Alison. I used <a href="http://www.kelbysews.blogspot.com/">Kelly B.'s</a> <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/92125716/wonky-alphabet-pdf">wonky alphabet paper pieced patter</a>n.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikv_McAU8xCl0AJAfeDUtHqAWkCoiZs93F6qyXWFxhLOl81xlEtt5zgutUnQScD-TID4ljUJcCPHrIROuIAIf9hMd02ICeVdqkAf46Qvwrl85xvK4y6HCAJvES9NQlaH2pSCyp2OmnMBiZ/s1600/011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikv_McAU8xCl0AJAfeDUtHqAWkCoiZs93F6qyXWFxhLOl81xlEtt5zgutUnQScD-TID4ljUJcCPHrIROuIAIf9hMd02ICeVdqkAf46Qvwrl85xvK4y6HCAJvES9NQlaH2pSCyp2OmnMBiZ/s400/011.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And last, but not least, <a href="http://www.weshallsew.blogspot.com/">Melissa</a> asked for some <a href="http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/2012/01/mod-mosaic-tutorials.html">Mod Mosaic</a> blocks to help her complete this <a href="http://weshallsew.blogspot.com/2012/02/wip-wednesday-552.html">WiP</a>. As a person with a lot of WiPs, I really loved and appreciated this idea! She assigned me one green block and one red block. Here's my green:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi499EyAeoAwnu7H7NfNUwBVS1dCtXDVVN-MlOMVOozYMok0-XCLEvv8ik0tjvgYxiXu4NZlhGHngdQ3vet55kTxkYVUbiIRpAOZvY8HRDh_67ciqbIps2w2S9NzmY7SQScNWsew-fcshZQ/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi499EyAeoAwnu7H7NfNUwBVS1dCtXDVVN-MlOMVOozYMok0-XCLEvv8ik0tjvgYxiXu4NZlhGHngdQ3vet55kTxkYVUbiIRpAOZvY8HRDh_67ciqbIps2w2S9NzmY7SQScNWsew-fcshZQ/s400/002.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And my red:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8W_Fkp_sEQKv191ctJ-ikygB9UShPdeyRzsaKqI8GJM3ywXTIWt352XIk2hi3vki7GBofvbqtlTw-afOVaR4FpRyw3aAPJ0au0w_qQRjanSM9TuOKZP1YV_WDp-vO1T9r9IOn58TSHyG8/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8W_Fkp_sEQKv191ctJ-ikygB9UShPdeyRzsaKqI8GJM3ywXTIWt352XIk2hi3vki7GBofvbqtlTw-afOVaR4FpRyw3aAPJ0au0w_qQRjanSM9TuOKZP1YV_WDp-vO1T9r9IOn58TSHyG8/s400/001.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I've done a few of these blocks before, and they weren't my favorite. My seam ripper and I usually spent a lot of time together whenever I attempted these in the past. I'm happy to say that I didn't have to rip out one seam this time! I think it finally clicked! I'm really proud, particularly, of that green block. I have an affinity for polka dots, and the color green, and I realized that I have <i>several</i> green polka dotted fabrics. I also love Echino, and I only have a small piece of that glasses fabric left, but was more than happy to use it for this block. I also like that little cupcake. That block is <i>me</i>.<br />
<br />
Anyways, I'm not going to go back and blog about all the blocks I didn't blog about along the way, but here's a mosaic that shows blocks that I made for every month of this Bee Year.<br />

I used <a href="http://modafabrics.blogspot.com/2012/03/lucie-summers-summersville.html">Summersville</a> by <a href="http://www.blu-shed.blogspot.com/">Lucie Summers</a> for Moda. I thought about adding in some solids, but I really liked how well this line worked altogether, and I ended up using the black prints as kind of an anchor - when I was making the HSTs, I just sewed a black print onto another color.<br />

This pillow also has an invisible zipper. I've never done an invisible zipper before, and it's not perfect, but it's good enough. I definitely want to make some of these for my own couch! Well, I'm happy to say that I finished it up this past weekend at the Sew Day for ECMQG! I basted it in time to take with me to the sew, and was able to quilt and bind it there. It feels so nice to actually cross something this big off my list! I sent it off to my friend Anna today. I hope she and her baby likes it!<br />

I really enjoyed making this quilt. I love the colors and the clean, simple style. Anna made it easy on me, and picked the fabrics for the whole thing, which was really nice! She chose Essex Linen in Dusty Blue and Ivory for the zig zags. And for the bike, she picked Michael Miller Bicycles, because her husband used to be a professional cyclist. Love that little personal touch!<br />

She also chose this great gray houndstooth fabric for the binding. I thought it tied everything together nicely.<br />
<br />

<br />
As for the quilting, I just did some simple echo quilting, in coordinating thread color.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAHjwCWjinJEFCSXtx6borZQ16zSbgsOa8_xEqzHvZ8lBXbikkYk4-ueu1pD3FcozYj49p_W2qg2-330Nuxy4_8NrZGSml2of5Nn-ZJW3fyXPG9cNFmH-_EWQ-0LqT4oOp5eo5SW_7sw8K/s1600/009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAHjwCWjinJEFCSXtx6borZQ16zSbgsOa8_xEqzHvZ8lBXbikkYk4-ueu1pD3FcozYj49p_W2qg2-330Nuxy4_8NrZGSml2of5Nn-ZJW3fyXPG9cNFmH-_EWQ-0LqT4oOp5eo5SW_7sw8K/s400/009.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The quilt finished at about 42 1/2" by 50 1/2", so it's not too small, not too big. The baby will grow into it nicely.<br />
<br />
Moving onto other things, at this week's ECMQG meeting, we're supposed to have a handmade name tag. I came up with this challenge, after seeing other guilds doing it, but I struggled with what to do. I've been dying to make this Japanese X and + block that I've seen - I can't remember the first place I saw them, but Amy over at <a href="http://badskirt.blogspot.com/">Badskirt Amy</a> did a <a href="http://badskirt.blogspot.com/2011/04/japanese-x-and-scrappy-quilt-tutorial.html">tutorial</a> on how to make it. So I decided to just go with that for my name tag, and my idea was to embroider my name in the middle + part of the block.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQfh8A4qUzvosUTXpHpoya1HlVslvG5j-bXDoEwkCQFsqd1jZl8Mp_mUnfoFa0ABK_a-oZg-w6M5H7JyKoSTJ38LKZ9_ZzRthVrMV84VC3xOUxksUsp9Br61mrYU4P8dOVAs_IAQfLwln0/s1600/025.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQfh8A4qUzvosUTXpHpoya1HlVslvG5j-bXDoEwkCQFsqd1jZl8Mp_mUnfoFa0ABK_a-oZg-w6M5H7JyKoSTJ38LKZ9_ZzRthVrMV84VC3xOUxksUsp9Br61mrYU4P8dOVAs_IAQfLwln0/s400/025.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
So that's exactly what I did! A few months ago, I won a giveaway by <a href="http://www.sewmodernonline.com/">Sew Modern</a> (seriously, I miss that store) of a <a href="http://shop.sewmodernonline.com/BUN-Mod+Basics-Dottie.html">FQ bundle</a> of these Dottie fabrics (by Jay Cyn Designs for Birch Fabrics) in different colors. I'm a polka dot freak, so I thought using these fabrics for my name tag would be perfect.<br />
<br />
I also embroidered around the + with coordinating floss, and quilted just a simple echo in the rest of the block. I wasn't sure what to use for the binding, and thought twice about using yet another dottie fabric, but now that it's done, I really like it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdbW2o4LdzxJ1krzFVj05nGu048npPK2pNS_GZ5X8G3NVAXklZUeDpv7vVf-i7Tjdx6OS9u21p2rC7oSnv9y-5X89npDzuGYvP49cbUQ8cUwzU9ccHaLGWI1xYt3EJ_NWVCiqMhsICTEKr/s1600/026.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdbW2o4LdzxJ1krzFVj05nGu048npPK2pNS_GZ5X8G3NVAXklZUeDpv7vVf-i7Tjdx6OS9u21p2rC7oSnv9y-5X89npDzuGYvP49cbUQ8cUwzU9ccHaLGWI1xYt3EJ_NWVCiqMhsICTEKr/s400/026.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Let me tell you, this baby is big - as far as name tags go. Like, Flavor Flav big. It's not a giant clock necklace, but it <i>is</i> an 8" square. Have you ever seen a name tag that big? Probably not. I didn't really know how to go about hanging it around my neck, because this thing is definitely too big to pin. So I was browsing around for some inspiration and I remembered that <a href="http://thehappyzombie.com/blog/">Monica</a> also made a <a href="http://thehappyzombie.com/blog/?p=541">giant name tag</a> for the <a href="http://www.portlandmodernquiltguild.blogspot.com/">Portland MQG</a> (we like big tags and we cannot lie), and realized that she used a selvage. I thought that was a brilliant idea, and used the selvage from the bicycles fabric above.<br />

Besides it being so big, I'm really happy with it, and I just wanna make a ton of these blocks!Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16790873407769421892noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2797872142495169402.post-34389676287179566982012-06-06T07:10:00.000-05:002012-06-06T07:10:32.809-05:00WiP WednesdayWow - it's been a while! Life is catching up with me, I guess. I'm still sewing - just not as much. And I'm finding I just don't have a lot of time to blog. Or at least, if I do have time, I don't really think about it.
<br />
First I want to show something that I recently finished. <br />
<br />
Before I moved to Florida last year I knew I wanted to start a modern quilt guild. Through Flickr and her blog, I discovered that <a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.kelbysews.blogspot.com">Kelly B.</a> lived here and was also interested in starting a MQG. Around that same time, I found (through the main MQG website) Melissa, another girl in the area that wanted a guild. The three of us emailed, and finally met together after I moved here. Kelly and Melissa both helped me get this guild started in a major way, and in September of last year, the <a href="http://www.emeraldcoastmodernquiltguild.blogspot.com/">Emerald Coast MQG</a> had it's first meeting!<br />
<br />
At that time, Kelly and myself were both Air Force spouses, which means that we aren't here permanently. Kelly's time in Florida was coming to a close, and she would be moving in May. Since she was such a big part of this guild, I wanted to do something special for her. So I made up some <a href="http://www.psiquilt.com/2010/01/siggy-block-tutorial.html">siggy blocks</a> for people in the guild to sign. Once they were all signed, I pieced them together, along with a border, then gave that to <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/quarksandwidgets/">Melanie</a> to handstitch over the names. She gave it back to me. I quilted it, bound it, and sent it off to Kelly (because we didn't finish it in time to give it to her in person before she moved).
We made it into a wall hanging, and hopefully it will live on the wall in Kelly's new beautiful sewing room in Tennessee.<br />

<br />We miss Kelly and keep trying to convince her to come down once a month for meetings. </div>

Now onto the WiPs...</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I started my block for the <a href="http://www.quiltcon.com/get-involved/quiltcon-block-challenge/">QuiltCon Block Challenge</a> a week or so ago. It's actually taking me longer than I'd like, but I haven't had a chance to just sit down and finish it, and there's lots of HST's involved. Here's a sneak peek:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisBp711eGM-Mzb9ZOpOgt4aBkNnM_EWHJov9VdjoawAZna5YeTW2iOzHieaRrCiVmhtialWE2tbGbxI7c5c8OcWHYQBDDfjTmwCG6V44w6VNTU5THsg3qm4XVhnabUxMLs88aJ6LsnAiZq/s1600/004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisBp711eGM-Mzb9ZOpOgt4aBkNnM_EWHJov9VdjoawAZna5YeTW2iOzHieaRrCiVmhtialWE2tbGbxI7c5c8OcWHYQBDDfjTmwCG6V44w6VNTU5THsg3qm4XVhnabUxMLs88aJ6LsnAiZq/s400/004.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And I've taken my first custom order for a quilt. She wants a zig zag quilt for her baby. I've got the blocks assembled, just have to trim (my least favorite part) and put it all together.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
And another round of the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/1197421@N20/">Pillow Talk {Swap}</a> on Flickr is starting, so I signed up for that. I'm making time for it because I love that swap <em>so much</em>, and had to sit out the last round. I'm not missing it again, and my couch is in need of a new pillow! I'm eagerly waiting to find out who my partner is so I can start working on that, so stay tuned...<br />
